My Curriculum Map: MHS CONCERT STRINGS
So, I kind of lucked out on this assignment because my District had already tasked me with developing something very similar this summer. I merged my District's expectations with the expectations for this assignment, and I like how the finished product turned out. My organizational tool is Google Sheets because this is what we had already started working on at a PD session earlier this summer. However, I used the Graphic Designer side of my brain to try to make it look more like a Padlet or Trollo board; I think the results came out pretty well.
I used the first 6 Illinois Fine Arts Music Standards for this assignment. These standards fall under the CREATING and PERFORMING umbrellas within the framework. We music teachers in this class have bonded over the fact that, as a performance-based discipline, it is often difficult to fit what we do into these nice standards-based frameworks. However, with the way the template was structured, I found it pretty easy to do.
As my District is moving to a very Standards-Aligned approach in the fall, I found the readings in this unit to be very helpful. I am hopeful that the field of Music Education can continue to develop a way for music teachers to fell confident that they are meeting their standards without feeling the guilt or panic of sacrificing rehearsal time and thus having to sacrifice expectations of the final performance. I believe that well developed, structured curriculums have the best chance to achieve these results, and if we learn to use the technology that is available to us in the most efficient ways, I think we'll find the curriculum working for us and not against us.
I agree with Laura! I am very impressed to see this done in Google Sheets! I would never have thought to do it that way! It does make it shareable and accessable to those who use Google. I know nothing about this topic, but you have helped me see and understand a foreign topic! Wonderful job!
I really love that you used Google Sheets. I think sometimes we try to use whatever new thing has recently come out when sometimes the "old" standbys make it more accessible to others and likely to stand the test of time. It also can make it more accessible to people in your department and beyond. I also love that you were able to include the links. I don't know much at all about the music standards, but the way this was organized made a lot of sense to me. Looks great!
