What's

NEXT?

This is just the start of your journey toward effectively integrating technology into your disciplinary content. By continuing to ask questions, researching their answers, and reimagining possibilities, technology has the potential to transform students' learning experiences. This challenge gives you the opportunity to begin to think about what you'll do after this class's conclusion. Follow the steps below to complete the challenge.

Man Writing

To Annotate

  1. Reading others' work can prompt you to ask yourself questions about how you can translate their ideas into your own context. Practitioner-oriented, peer-reviewed journals are a good place to find ideas and formulate questions. For this annotation, rather than reading a text I provide for you, find a peer-reviewed journal article in your discipline that taps into your curiosities. Create at least two annotations and reply to at least two of your colleagues' annotations using Hypothes.is. (Again, make sure when you make these annotations that you have chosen to post them in our class annotation group: TCH 432 Summer 2021.) If you are annotating prior to your colleagues' posts, make sure to come back in a couple of days to engage in the conversation. Here are some potential practitioner-oriented, peer-reviewed journals for you to explore. (Please note, you will likely need to access issues through Milner Library as most require a paid-subscription.)

    1. ELA

      1. English Journal

      2. Voices from the Middle

      3. Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy

      4. Language Arts

      5. The Reading Teacher

    2. Social Studies

      1. Social Education

      2. Middle Level Learning

      3. Social Studies and the Young Learner

    3. Math

      1. Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12

      2. Mathematics Teacher Educator

      3. Journal for Research in Mathematics Education

    4. Science

      1. Science & Children

      2. Science Scope

      3. The Science Teacher

      4. Connected Science Learning

Scouting

To Explore

  1. Discipline-specific professional organizations are also great resources for thinking about how to design with technology. Take some time to explore the resources they have to offer. Many will directly address technology integration:

    1. National Council of Teachers of English

    2. National Council for the Social Studies

    3. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

    4. National Science Teaching Association

  2. In addition to professional organizations, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards also outlines standards for teachers in the disciplines. Spend some time examining them. (The drop-down menu on the right will allow you to access a specific discipline's standards.) What do they have to say about technology integration?

To Create

Learning shouldn't stop when our class stops. So what's next for you? This challenge is designed to help you articulate the next question you would like to explore in terms of technology integration in your discipline:

  1. Think back across the last four weeks, particularly to the areas of knowledge identified in TPACK as Technology & Pedagogy (TP) Knowledge and your Technology & Disciplinary Content (TC) Knowledge. With your plans in mind, and thinking about what you've gleaned in our short four weeks, consider what "knowledge" you want to pursue next after this course is over. Perhaps you planned to incorporate a visualization activity using an infographic app into your math class (TC); however, you have only heard about this kind of activity, but have never actually tried it yourself. So, before the next school year begins, you want to try a few apps, create an example text for your class, etc.

  2. Using a multimedia tool, tell us your plans in detail and why those are the next steps for you.

  3. Share the resources you plan to use. Are there specific tools? Do you have a text that inspired your idea?

  4. Create a blog post that includes links to your presentation and resources. Provide any additional information you think others need in order to fully understand your thinking. Be sure to tag it as a What's Next for Me post. Comment on at least two of your classmates' posts.
