I have used Classcraft with 5th and 6th grade students and they enjoyed learning how to use the platform. The default settings are okay, but I think it works best if you can really personalize it to your space and how you want to use in within the classroom. With the right set up, I think you could really use the badge system and the leveling up to motivate students. I will be interested to see what types of interactive challenges you are able to create with them. Are there certain skills or standards you are wanting to address, such as providing motivation for practicing?

I absolutely love that you are incorporating gaming into your class. It is such a HUGE part of our student's lives and if you can tie it to your content, why not? I have thought about bring Minecraft into mine and I am just unsure of where to start with it! This is awesome. My recommendation is that you try it and get a REALLY good handle on it before you incorporate it. Being a STEM teacher, this has been one of my biggest challenges. I have tried incorporating technology or a project without having a good handle on it and it does not do ANYONE any good. Really know the ins and outs before hand. If you think yo…

How awesome is gamification?! It's great! I was recently introduced to this and to see you plan come to life with gamification is genius. A lesson like this is a good tool to bring a lesson alive but or students to really use metacognition. They will have the ability to go back and pull from an experience like this.

"I want my students to walk into my room and feel that they are free to be creative and express themselves however they choose."

I loved this line! in your plan, and what a creative way to make that happen!

It is hard that so many of these programs do required paid accounts. I completely understand that people who design quality things need to make a living, but it can be hard to secure the funding for it. One of the perks (?) of the pandemic was how many companies provided free trials to teachers at the beginning of the shutdown. Of course, that wasn't sustainable, but it was nice while it lasted.

Hi David, my school has used classcraft before. It can be a great tool, but there are some things you should think about. One of my colleagues used it for his Social/Emotional learning lessons in his homeroom. He had to decide what happened when students managed to get their avatars killed. That actually happened with 6th graders a lot more than he would have imagined. He also tried to tie it to his content (language arts) but struggled to get students to buy into the content as much as the game. He thought it was useful, but these were some problems he ran into that you can think about.
