I decided to focus on our wall building unit in our building trades class. The problem of practice that is addressed is that students have difficulty recalling the wall-building process throughout the class. I have added a video tutorial element along with a video evaluation component to the assignment. The video will be added to the student's classroom Google site upon completion. The video will be accessible for future reference throughout the class.
To plan the technology integration for this lesson I utilized the TIP model. I used the TIP model because it reminds me of the engineering design process. The engineering design process is something I am very comfortable with. One of the major similarities of these 2 methods is that they are cyclical in that they allow for a constant reevaluation loop. This allows lessons to be adjusted eaisly as technology improves or students become disengaged.
One way that I feel this assignment connects with the course content is through the simulation model. This assignment allows students to apply real world skills in a way that actually produces a product. The groups formed in class will run like a buisiness, keeping track of hours worked, creating estimates and making sure their end product meets the expectations of their customer. I feel the added component of creating a video adds to the simulation as well. Some contractors have started to become YouTube content creators in order to bring in more income. The students get an opportunity to create their own tutorials which is a valuable skill to have.
I think this is a very thorough, thought out plan. I appreciate the realization that due to your class moving, internet based tools will be difficult. Phones are a great idea. They can create their video, either just on the camera, or you can download an app such as WeVideo. Then students can edit at home. I am sure students will also have a blast creating a video, and watching eachothers!
