Week 4 #F5F

Week 4 #F5F

Find #1

I have been looking for classes to help get my Revit knowledge up to speed. I was able to find a webinar offering from Revit next week. The timing works out well as we wrap up class. I hope to hear about some of the changes that have been made to Revit and learn about how Revit is being used in the industry today.

Find #2

I enjoyed reading this article about students and perseverance. I think this addresses a problem that is becoming more common each year with students. The article has some good points about PBL and productive struggle. I think that student resistance to struggle is why we must incorporate more problem-based lesson design in the classroom. Students move from seeing struggle as failure to see it as learning opportunities.

Find #3

This story was a great example of students solving a real-world problem in an engineering class. I love how they were able to help someone, and see how their innovation changed a person's life. This was an awesome opportunity for students that I am certain they will not forget anytime soon.

Find #4

I felt this article addressed a topic that is relevant to both carpenters and architects. As we have seen lumber prices absolutely skyrocket this year, the need for renewable building materials is becoming undeniable. This article gives some great examples of structures and materials that are being used. I will definitely be sharing this with my classes, especially when we work on our green design project.

Find #5

I found a picture of a mock-up mini house/shed being constructed on the carpenters training center Twitter feed. I felt that this helped confirm that we are doing projects that will prepare my students for a future career. Below the union training center photo is a photo from my class this year. The two projects are very similar in size and construction methods used.

Summary:

I think that overall this assignment helped me to realize that there are some benefits to having a professional Twitter account. While this is something that I still struggle to use for providing content, I do think that it is useful for making connections and staying up to date with training and information directed at educators. I look forward to engaging in a few of the different pieces of training that I found the last 4 weeks and continuing to expand my PLN.
