Problems of Practice: Elementary Mathematics

Writer's picture: Mary JanssenMary Janssen

When thinking about common problems that arose during instruction, I realized that while many of the specifics were issues that had happened over the past six years in my fifth grade classroom, the broader issues applied to mathematics instruction across the elementary grades. Next year I will be teaching K-1 special education students and K-5 RTI mathematics. I think this process aided me in preparing for both.

As I am looking over yours, I see that some of the problems you have in the elementary are extremely similar or the same to the problems I have in the high school. Some problems never go away. I also said that sometimes technology cannot be used to help fix a problem. I can really connect with your work! Great job!

You had me at "reminded me a lot of Guess Who." I was curious as to what technologies would be listed to help with math. There were times growing up where I wish there was more than just doing 25 of the same type of problems. It's awesome to see there are technological applications!
