This presentation explains how to incorporate the Analysis Function of the Tonal Energy Tuner App in the music classroom. Students can visualize and interact with the Tonal Energy Tuner App. This presentation describes and shows how to help students analyze if they are holding a pitch steady and in tune on a wind instrument.

Lesson Plan
Objectives: Students will interact with the Analysis Function of the Tonal Energy Tuner to determine if they are able to hold a pitch steady and in tune. Students will also analyze their intonation of the beginning, middle, and end of the pitch.
Activities:
All activities will be completed in pairs. Students will find a partner to work with to analyze their pitch. Students will work together, take turns, and help each other to complete the following activities:
1. Start by playing and holding a Concert Bb into the Tonal Energy Tuner App Analysis Function.
2. Adjust tuning slide and/or mouthpiece until in tune.
3. Next, each student will hold a Concert Bb for seven seconds. The partner will time them.
4. Students will draw the analysis of their seven-second pitch on the provided worksheet. Students will be asked to draw two parts: the line that shows intonation and the line that demonstrates if the pitch was held steady or not.

Example Drawing:
5. Students will repeat this activity two more times, including the drawing, to try to improve their tuning and steadiness.
6. At the end of the lesson activities, students will be asked to write a written response and answer the following questions:
-By the third attempt, did your intonation improve? Did your steadiness improve? Explain.
-By the third attempt, how many cents sharp or flat were you?
-What did you discover about your intonation? Reference the beginning, middle, and
end of the note.
-What did you discover about your pitch steadiness?

Wow! I am learning so much about music instruction through this class. This is such a neat way to teach an abstract concept like that and make it so concrete and easy for students to see if they are hitting the note effectively or not. I bet the students really enjoy doing activities like this.
I have only used this for tuning instruments. I had no idea there were all these functions or even this analysis feature! It's cool to see all the possibilities of an app that you only use for their base function! I will have to explore Tonal Energy more!
