TIPS FOR REMOTE LEARNING
As schools work to develop plans for students to return this year, we wanted to provide support for teachers working to design meaningful and important learning experiences for learners - especially in online spaces.
Think About Design
YES! YOU are a designer! It's funny to think about yourself as a designer of learning experiences until you take time to think about what that means and entails. As professionals, teachers are the creators...the constructors....the designers of learning experiences for our students because we know our learners better than anyone. When it comes to curriculum design, it's essential to dissect the "WHY" of your teaching to better understand where you want to go, how you want to get there, what you'll need along the way to support ALL learners.
As we plan for instruction in online spaces, it begs us to start with design in mind rather than focus on the tools and the materials learning may need inside of a design.
Figure 1: Starting Your Design
Embracing your inner designer can start with answering a few questions that get you thinking about your curriculum and the learning experiences you want for your students. The figure below invites you to think about design using a series of questions. These questions offer a sense of brainstorming or play with your content as you begin to scratch the surface of designing purposeful learning.
