1. Talking to Strangers
Try New Things
Asking questions, making connections, and trying new things are the essence of this science of human beings. But I have found them to be much more than that. They are also the foundation for being the best human you can be.

Lesson
Imagine if we never took the time to get to know our students, say yes to different experiences, or try anything that pushed us out of our own comforts. Trying new things, making connections, and asking meaningful questions became a staple in our teaching at a very early age and only continue to grow over time.
From trying new foods to listening to the most popular songs, it allowed us to connect (and, keep connecting) with those who are around us and beyond. Because we value these ideas, we often look for ways to experience different perspectives and stretch our understanding of the world around us.

Challenge
In efforts to try new things, make connections, and ask meaningful questions, we need to talk to people outside of our comfort zones. Your first challenge is to go out into the world and meet a stranger, hear their story, and ask if you can share it. On Instagram or your blog, post a portrait and a short excerpt from what you learned about them that you think best represents this moment for them. Use hashtags #teachwhys #teachwhyschallenge1

Step outside your comfort zone and try to meet someone different from you – of a different age, background, or walk of life. Your post should not be a story about how you met, but instead a very short quote, story, or glimpse into their life at this moment.

For inspiration, look at the beautiful Humans of New York series of photos by Brandon Stanton.
When you go out into the world, imagine that everyone has a story to tell. This can allow you to see others at their best, and this attitude can shine through in your interactions - making it a warm and inviting space to have a meaningful conversation.
Example Post
The post below is an example of a post made by one of Sarah's students.
What is one thing you want to do before you die?
"I would probably want to go on a cruise or some type of excursion around to world. That would give me a chance to see many beautiful sights and experience life to the fullest.”
The project has taught me that talking to people you don’t know well, or even at all isn’t as bad as it might seem.
