literacy & Technology

Across Middle Level Disciplines

Student Behind the Books

ABOUT

the class

This class focuses on literacy within the disciplines. We take a disciplinary literacy approach rather than a content literacy approach. What is the difference? Content literacy focuses more on the content of the different subject areas, often imposing literacy strategies that do not necessarily match the discipline. Disciplinary literacy focuses more on the process or thinking of being literate in the discipline. How can students participate in the discipline in ways that are similar to experts in the field?

Technology is included in the class because it is a natural fit to our expanded study of meaning-making. Thus, the class is geared toward helping students make sense in each discipline no matter the text.

What is the payoff for you? You will learn how to enhance the learning of your students, helping them experience the language and texts that increase their understanding of the discipline.
