Getting Started

How Our Class Works

This is a literature methods course. It considers the term literature broadly, focusing on books, as well as other types of texts including film and podcasts. Together, we will explore approaches to integrating literature in meaningful ways in the ELA classroom. We will learn to understand the purposes behind selecting one text for the entire class to read together, connecting multiple titles to one theme for small groups to read together, and providing time for students to read individually selected titles.

Because this is a methods course, we focus on the hows and whys behind our teaching decisions. In addition to the activities we participate in during our time together on Mondays, you will also have readings and other tasks to complete between our meetings. Most of the time, this will be reading in preparation for the next week's discussion, completing tasks that were not finished during our time together and/or working on the larger course projects. You will be expected to have completed each week's tasks by Sundays at 5pm.

As you know, we will begin our course online. Our Zoom meeting room number is 91277767181.

Have Questions?

I've designed this course so that you have multiple routes to finding answers. Check out our FAQ page for commonly asked questions and answers. I will update that page as common questions arise. I also encourage you to use Slack. Questions specific to your work or situation can be directly Slacked to me. More general questions should be posed in the questions channel. This will allow others to answer your questions should they see them before I do.
